At Course Completion

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain Unified Messaging features, architecture, support and partnerships.
  • Plan a Unified Messaging strategy utilizing Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, call flows, and consolidation planning.
  • Set up and configure Unified Messaging on an Exchange Server 2007 messaging system.
  • Use Unified Messaging with Microsoft Outlook 2007, including Web Access, Voice Access, voice mail, and Auto Attendant.
  • Administer and monitor Unified Messaging.

Course Outline

Module 1: Overview of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging Services

This module provides an introduction to the features and architecture of Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging, including enterprise features, support and partnerships.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Explain Exchange Server 2007 inbox Anywhere Access.
  • Explain Unified Messaging features, including call handling, options for playing voice messages, client options, fax receiving, Outlook voice access, automatic speech recognition, DTMF, and auto attendant.
  • Explain basic Unified Messaging architecture for call handling and Outlook voice access.
  • Explain the enterprise features of Unified Messaging, including highly flexible WAN configuration options, Unified Messaging administration, fault tolerance and failover, and scalability and load balancing.
  • Explain Unified Messaging support and partnerships, including cross-boundary validation and troubleshooting support tools, Unified Messaging specialists, and VoIP gateway vendors.

Module 2: Unified Messaging Enterprise Deployment Scenarios

This module gives an overview of telephony concepts related to Unified Messaging and describes common existing enterprise scenarios. In addition, the module describes integrated voice messaging and auto attendant services, explains the basics of architecting a Unified Messaging solution, and gives the student an opportunity to design a Unified Messaging integration strategy based on a given scenario.

Lab : Designing a Unified Messaging Integration Strategy for Northwind Traders

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Explain basic telephony concepts, including circuit switching, connectivity, packet switching, VoIP, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and Real-time Transport Protocol.
  • Describe common existing enterprise scenarios, including Central Office Telephone Exchange (Centrex), key telephone systems, and Private Branch eXchange (PBX) systems.
  • Describe integrated voice messaging and auto attendant services, including call answering, subscriber access, Outlook voice access, fax receiving, speech recognition, text-to-speech, and automated attendant.
  • Propose a Unified Messaging implementation strategy based on a given scenario and utilizing VoIP gateways, call flows, and consolidation planning.

Module 3: Deploying Unified Messaging Servers

This module explains the Exchange Server Unified Messaging server role and describes how to use the exchange management console to configure Unified Messaging. Students will gain hands-on experience interactively installing the Unified Messaging role on a server and configuring the Unified Messaging environment to receive incoming calls and apply dialing instructions.

Module 4: Deploying Unified Messaging Clients

This module explains how to deploy Unified Messaging clients and describes common Unified Messaging administrative tasks. Students will gain hands-on experience using Unified Messaging with Outlook 2007, including Web Access, Voice Access, voice mail, and Auto Attendant features. Students will also practice administering and monitoring Unified Messaging.
